WSOP History
How The Idea Was Born
Officially, the World Series of Poker has been held annually since 1970. But the idea was born back in 1949. Young Nick Dandolos came to young Benny Binion… I don’t know what they were talking about but in the end Nick suggested to run a high-stake poker game. “That’s a good idea!” – thought Binion. So they staged this tournament.
I’m sure that it was Nick who was going to win. But… Johnny was better. You know this Johhny – it’s famous Johnny Moss. He and Dandolos played for about 5 months. In full public view. They played, and played… and played… This was the first time when Johnny won. And his prize was - $2,000,000. Later he proved his title twice (in 1970 and 1971), but this was one of the best moments in his life, I think.
For some reason, he decided to repeat this high-stake game only 20 years later… And then began the golden WSOP Era.
The Horseshoe’s History
Binion is known as a man “who pushed the limits”. Why? Because his idea to push the limits forced him to found his own casino where the limit size of the bet was $500 (not $50 as in other casinos).
Binion was a pioneer – he was the first to put a carpet in the casino, the first to offer free drinks to slot machine players. So – The Horseshoe belonged to Binion’s family for years… Now it belongs to the Harrah’s (they bought it in 2004, January). Is it good or bad? Actually, it’s a pity that it’s no longer Binion’s Horseshoe, but as you know the casino’s previous owner Becky Binion had no idea of how to manage with it. As for Harrah’s Entertainment - they put life into the Horseshoe.
“The Benny Binion”
THE Benny Binion… “THE” – because he’s like a trademark, like something that made Las Vegas a gambling capital. Benny Binion was born to gamble, but he wasn’t a gambler. He was the greatest casino holder ever. Sometimes I wonder why didn’t he become a poker player. Maybe, he knew too much about the human nature. Just think about his golden rule: “If you wanta get rich make little people feel like big people”.
Binion… looks like a wild western story hero. In fact his life was like a movie (Western, of course). Many people attempted on his life. But nobody succeeded…
WSOP Today
Now you need only $10,000 to enter the WSOP. Now it’s fashionable to get a seat at the WSOP in the online tournaments. Like Greg Raymer or Chris Moneymaker. So, the face of the World Champion has changed too. It’s not longer Slim’s or Binion’s old style. Old-timers were replaced by the new wave players. |
